I don’t know how the idea came up – it was probably the volatile mix of WordCamp L.A., Disneyland, NFL Opening weekend and Week 2 of the college football season – but on the way back from SoCal this week I started thinking about how WordPress needs a mascot.

Yeah, that’s the kind of stuff I think about while waiting for WP presentations or in long lines to meet Goofy and Co. at the Happiest Place on Earth.

WordPress needs its Mickey. Its Albert the Gator (University of Florida). Its own Tux the Penguin (Linux).

Something cool, yet somewhat geeky.

Something that captures the WordPress community … like … I don’t know … a desktop piled with candy bars, RedBull cans and half-empty Starbucks cups with “Matt M.” penned on the side.

But inanimate objects won’t work. We need something that’s alive … and “has heart” as them football coaches would say.

Something like a … wombat! Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Woodward the WordPress Wombat … or WWW for short, how fitting.

Like many WordPress users, the wombat, according to Wikipedia, is:

– a hairy creature, whose fur varies from a sandy color to brown, and even black or gray;
– known to dig extensive burrow systems (like a blogger in mom’s basement);
– nocturnal, rarely seeing the light of day;
– a slow mover, keen on using shortcuts; and
– large-brained and regularly outsmarts its intruders … fending them off with a toughened rear hide of all things.

I mean really, isn’t that your prototypical WP user in a nutshell?

And an unknown fact about wombats? These crazy marsupials have an adventurous side, as you can see by the base-jumping wombat designer Ryan Kilimnik created above. Woodward so wants to be WordPress’ mascot, that he’s base jumping off the Golden State Bridge to garner attention and support.

So there you go, Woodward the WordPress Wombat. Vote for WWW to be the next WordPress mascot by responding in the comments section of the following posts:
